A big-hearted and dedicated volunteer going a long way for his local community
Every Tuesday, Mount Gold in Plymouth sees its trusted keyholder walk hours through rain and shine to volunteer at the veterans’ coffee morning for Age UK.
Unlocking gates, letting people in, preparing teas/coffees/cakes, counting of attendees and a report to his supervisor. James Toll dedicates his time and selflessness without question.
James spends his time connecting with the naval veterans, making them feel valued and listened to. Such is James’ compassion for others within his community.
He is also an important cog in the running of things. When the new home manager at Douglas House, Rebecca Easton, started, James took her along to be his apprentice for the day as part of her induction. He made absolutely sure he put her to work!
Age UK has facilitated training courses for James. These have included dementia awareness and first aid.
Being in this environment has spurred James to enrol in a college course, as he wants to better himself. He is currently underway on his maths level one course.
Again, recognising his selflessness and how he brings sunshine to work every Tuesday, Age UK nominated James for a Sunshine Award, and he attended a ceremony at Plymouth Aquarium as a result.
The attendance at the ceremony was something to be proud of in itself; just for him to stand in a room full of people on a Tuesday is a huge achievement, testament to how determined he is to control his anxiety.
Age UK said about James:
“James is a fabulous volunteer. He helps with our Veterans Sticky Buns Morning and is always greeting veterans with a smile. He is on hand to help in any way that he can by making sure that the tea/coffee facilities are topped up, carrying the veterans’ refreshments to their tables.
“James makes sure that he enables our veterans to attend by opening the side gate to make their journey a little easier. Nothing is too much for James – he is always happy to help.
James consistently goes above and beyond in his volunteering role; he has the biggest heart and smile. His commitment and selfless contributions have made a lasting difference, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our team.
James has this to say about his volunteering and Leaders Awards win:
Thank you for choosing me. I never thought my effort was being noticed, and I thought less of winning an award like this.
I love supporting the veterans in the little way I can, and I love doing my volunteer work happily. Thank you.
