Leading Her Own Way, Mae’s Path to Paid Work and Confidence

There used to be a time when Mae couldn’t get a bus on her own. The idea left her feeling panicked and overwhelmed. But with self-belief and support, she’s now leading the way and absolutely loving it. “Getting the bus now on my own is just mad,” Mae says.

It feels amazing. I’ve become so much more independent and confident.

With the help of her support worker Helen and Dimensions, Mae practised different routes until she built up the confidence to take the journey solo. They used the local bus app to track routes and stops together, making it easier to navigate. Now, not only does Mae get to college independently, but she’s also familiar with multiple routes and can even guide others.

Mae’s independence has helped her achieve another major goal, paid work. She’s now a teaching assistant at a school for children with special needs, her dream job.

College didn’t really get what I wanted to do,” Mae explains. “They thought I should work in a nursery, but I wanted to support kids with additional needs. And now I’m doing it, it’s amazing.

Her journey hasn’t been without nerves, especially when she first started work. “At first, I used to sweat just holding a child’s hand and would panic,” she says. “But now I’m used to it. I love it. They’re the cutest, and I look forward to seeing them every week.”

Being nominated for a Leaders’ Award means the world to Mae. “It would be a dream,” she says. “I’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and to be recognised would be amazing.” Her next big goal is to move out and continue to build her own independent life.

Mae’s advice for others:

Just believe in yourself. I know it’s scary, but you can do it.

Helen, Mae’s support worker says:

Mae’s never let others’ expectations hold her back. While many of her friends went into hospitality, she knew that wasn’t for her. Instead, she stuck to her dreams and went after the exact role she wanted. Now, she has paid work in that role, even if not as many hours yet. She hasn’t let anything dampen her spirit, and I’m really proud of her for making it happen.
